Notion AI vs ChatGPT: An Assistant That Knows Your Notes, or One That Knows Everything?

Notion AI and ChatGPT compared for notes and team knowledge on official pricing: why Notion AI now comes with Business, and the limits of Arabic, RTL text and…

14 min read

The short answer: if your notes, meeting records and team wiki already live in Notion, Notion AI is the assistant that knows what your team has written. It searches it, summarises it and builds on it without you copying anything into another window. If you are one person who wants a general assistant that writes, analyses, draws, talks and searches the web, ChatGPT does more and costs less to start. Two things most comparisons miss: the full version of Notion AI is no longer a cheap add-on, because it now comes with the Business plan, and its meeting transcription still does not list Arabic among its languages.

The real question: where does your knowledge live?

“Which one is smarter?” is the wrong question for this pair, because they are not doing the same job. ChatGPT is a destination: you bring it a question and some material, it works on them, and you carry the result back to wherever it is needed. Notion AI is not really a product on its own. It is a layer inside a workspace that already holds your documents, databases and meeting notes, and it is only worth as much as what is in that workspace.

So the question that actually decides it is whether you have a written memory worth searching. If your team has been putting its procedures, project plans and meeting notes into Notion for a year, an assistant that can answer from all of that and point to the right page beats a cleverer model that knows nothing about you. If your Notion is half-empty, or you do not use it, Notion AI offers little that ChatGPT does not do more cheaply.

Everything below comes from each vendor’s own pricing pages and help documentation as read on 6 October 2026. The box at the end lists what we checked and what we could not.

Notion prices are per member of the workspace; ChatGPT Plus is a personal subscription. Setting $24 against $20 only makes sense if the workspace has one person in it.

Notion AI is no longer a $10 add-on

Anyone who looked at Notion AI a couple of years ago remembers it as an add-on you bolted onto any plan for around ten dollars a member. That is not what the pricing page offers now. The full AI feature set now sits inside the Business plan: the Notion Agent that runs multi-step tasks, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search across connected apps, and Research Mode. Free and Plus get what the page calls a “limited trial”.

For an individual this changes the maths. Using Notion AI properly means $24 a month, or $240 paid up front for the year, which is more than ChatGPT Plus. In fairness, that buys the whole of Notion Business, not just an assistant. But if Notion is your to-do list and a scratchpad, you are paying a lot for an assistant with very little to search.

Usage is not open-ended either. Notion’s AI FAQ describes a rolling six-hour allowance alongside a monthly one. Premium models are switched off by default and run on Notion credits, which a workspace owner buys at $10 per 1,000 credits per month. Notion says it charges tokens at each provider’s published rates with no markup. That is a fair model. It also means a team’s bill can drift above the seat price if people get used to the expensive models.

One loose end: the data behind Notion’s pricing page still includes a product called “ai” at $10 a month, but nothing on the page lets a visitor buy it. It may be a leftover for existing add-on customers. We could not confirm that, so do not plan around it.

Team knowledge search is where Notion AI earns its price

Writing is not why you would pay for Notion AI. ChatGPT writes at least as well. You pay for it when a new hire asks “how do I request leave?” and gets the answer from the page HR actually wrote, with a citation, and without seeing anything they are not cleared to see. Notion AI searches the pages you have access to. On Business it also reaches connected tools such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, and an admin can switch web search on or off for the whole workspace. Business also lets you mark a page as verified, and that badge shows up in search results and AI citations. It is a small feature aimed at a real problem: the assistant confidently quoting last year’s version of a procedure.

ChatGPT can reach Notion too. OpenAI’s help centre describes a Notion app that lets ChatGPT search and read the pages your connected account is allowed to see, and says it does not open up every page in the organisation. For an individual who occasionally wants to ask questions about their notes, that is a good arrangement. The difference is which way the work flows. ChatGPT goes into Notion, collects what it needs and answers in its own window. Notion AI works on the page in front of you, so it can build a database, fill in its properties or rewrite a draft where it sits. ChatGPT’s “company knowledge” feature, by its own pricing page, is for Business and Enterprise and is not included on any individual plan.

Meeting notes: strong feature, wrong language list

AI Meeting Notes is among the most polished parts of Notion. It transcribes from the desktop app with no bot joining the call, then writes a summary in which every point links back to its line in the transcript. The result becomes searchable alongside everything else the team knows. There is a ready-made audio message for asking attendees’ consent, and admins can have transcripts deleted automatically on a schedule.

Notion’s own help centre lists sixteen supported languages, including Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Russian. Arabic is not on the list, and speaker labels are English-only. If your meetings run in Arabic, or in the Arabic-English mix common in Gulf offices, do not buy Business for this feature until you have tried it on a real recording. The list may grow, but today it does not promise you anything.

ChatGPT offers record mode on Plus and Pro. We did not find its language list on the pages we read, so we cannot say how it handles Arabic. If that matters to you, step four of the test below is the one to run first.

Arabic inside Notion: what changed this year and what has not

English reviews skip this, but for Arabic speakers it is often the deciding factor. For years, writing Arabic in Notion meant fighting it. There was no Arabic interface and no right-to-left layout, so Arabic and Persian users relied on browser extensions and custom stylesheets to right-align their pages. That changed in early 2026, when Notion shipped its interface in Arabic and Hebrew, the first right-to-left languages in the product.

Notion’s language help page now lists Arabic. It says direction is detected automatically in most text blocks, except simple tables. Set the interface to Arabic and the whole UI mirrors on desktop and mobile, and you can set direction block by block. People who write mostly in English can turn on “Always show direction controls” in settings.

The simple-table exception matters more than it sounds, because plenty of teams keep task lists and comparisons in simple tables. Expect to fix those by hand or switch to a database. We would also expect blocks that open with an English word to be detected the wrong way round sometimes, flipping punctuation and brackets at the end of the line. That is the usual weakness of automatic direction detection, and Notion AI drafting Arabic full of English technical terms will run into it. We have not measured it, so step three below checks it.

Search is the harder unknown. Neither Notion’s nor OpenAI’s documentation explains how search treats Arabic morphology: hamza variants, tā’ marbūṭa, the definite article, diacritics. For an Arabic knowledge base that is a serious question, because a search for the plural of “procedure” may miss a page titled with the singular. Asking the AI in natural language should be more forgiving than keyword search, but that is our expectation, not a measurement. Step two of the test checks it on your own content.

Individual or team: the actual maths

On your own: ChatGPT Plus at $20 gets you the broader assistant, with images, voice, deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, and the Notion connection if you want it. Free Notion, or Plus at $10 a month billed yearly, is plenty for organising notes. Together that costs less than Notion Business and covers more. Notion AI only wins for a solo user who writes heavily in Notion and wants the AI on the page rather than beside it.

As a team of five: Notion Business billed yearly is $100 a month for all five. That buys a shared workspace with search across everything the team has written, plus meeting transcription. Five ChatGPT Plus subscriptions cost the same, but give you five separate assistants that each know nothing about what the others wrote. ChatGPT Business is built for teams from two users up, but its price only appears after the page localises to your country, and we could not read it.

The short version: Notion AI is an investment in what the team knows. ChatGPT is an investment in what each person can get done. That is why so many teams end up paying for both.

A ten-minute test you can run yourself

We are not handing out scores, because we ran no controlled benchmark. Use your own workspace and the Notion AI trial:

  1. Ask Notion AI a question whose answer is spread across three older pages. Ask ChatGPT the same through its Notion app. Which one cited the right pages?
  2. Search for an Arabic word in a different form from the one on the page, such as a plural instead of a singular, or a word typed without its hamza. Did plain search find it? Did a natural-language question to the AI?
  3. Ask Notion AI for an Arabic paragraph with three English terms in it. Check the block direction and where the full stop and brackets land, then repeat inside a simple table.
  4. Record two minutes of Arabic speech with both AI Meeting Notes and ChatGPT’s record mode, and compare each transcript with what was actually said.
  5. Ask each tool to turn a meeting summary into tasks with owners and dates. Notion AI can drop them straight into a database. Check whether that actually saves you time.

Step two tells you most about an Arabic knowledge base. Step four may settle the whole decision if your meetings are in Arabic.

Choose Notion AI if you…

  • work in a team that actually writes its meeting notes, procedures and projects in Notion.
  • want newcomers to find answers in the team’s knowledge without asking a colleague.
  • need AI inside databases: filling properties, summarising rows, building tables.
  • hold meetings in English or another supported language and want searchable records.
  • want your workspace data kept out of model training unless you opt in.

Choose ChatGPT if you…

  • work alone and want one assistant for writing, analysis, images and voice.
  • do not use Notion, or use it as a light personal notebook.
  • want the cheapest paid entry point: Go at $8 or Plus at $20.
  • only occasionally need to ask about your Notion pages, where the connected app is enough.
  • write in dialect, where ChatGPT has been the stronger tool in our earlier comparisons.

And if we are being completely honest…

These two complement each other more than they compete. A team that lives in Notion gets something from Notion AI that ChatGPT cannot provide: an assistant that knows the team’s history and respects its permissions. An individual who wants a general assistant will not find enough in Notion AI to justify the price. And for an Arabic-speaking team that runs on meetings, hold off on paying for Business just for meeting notes, because Arabic is not supported there yet.

Frequently asked

Is Notion AI free?

Free and Plus include a limited trial. The full agent, meeting transcription and connected-app search are Business and Enterprise features.

Can I still buy Notion AI as an add-on to Plus?

The current pricing page does not offer one. It offers an upgrade to Business, plus extra credits for premium models and Custom Agents.

Can ChatGPT read my Notion pages?

Yes, through the Notion app in ChatGPT’s settings. It can only see pages the connected Notion account is allowed to see.

Does Notion support Arabic right-to-left text?

Yes, since early 2026. Direction is detected automatically in most blocks except simple tables, and you can set it manually per block.

Is my data used for training?

Notion says it does not train on your data unless you opt in, that its AI subprocessors are contractually barred from doing so, and that those providers keep data for 30 days on every plan except Enterprise, which gets zero retention. ChatGPT may use individual-plan conversations for training unless you opt out. Read the policy for your own plan before pasting client data into either.

About this comparison

We read directly: Notion’s pricing page (notion.com/pricing), including the monthly and yearly Plus and Business prices in the page’s own data, which AI features each plan includes, and LLM-provider data retention. From Notion’s help centre: the Notion AI FAQ (usage allowance, premium models and credits, image generation, page translation), the AI Meeting Notes article (plan availability and consent), the Notion AI category FAQ (meeting transcription languages), the Notion credits article ($10 per 1,000 monthly credits) and the change-your-language article (Arabic, text direction, the simple-table exception). From OpenAI: the ChatGPT pricing page (features, context windows, record mode and company knowledge by plan) and the help article on the Notion app in ChatGPT.

Last verified: 6 October 2026.

What blocked us: ChatGPT’s pricing page fills in prices by country after loading, so we could not read the Go or Business prices from it. The $8 Go figure comes from our 13 September 2026 check, the $20 Plus figure matches what OpenAI’s help centre showed in our recent comparisons, and we quote no Business price. The early-2026 date for Notion’s Arabic launch comes from press coverage of Notion’s announcement, not from a Notion page. We found no language list for ChatGPT’s record mode and no documentation on how either tool’s search handles Arabic word forms. Notion does not publish a context window for Notion AI on the pages we read.

What we did not measure: we ran no controlled test of Arabic transcription or search accuracy and cite no scores. Our point about mixed-script blocks is an expectation based on how automatic direction detection usually works, not a measurement. The ten-minute test is there so you can check it on your own workspace.

Pricing and packaging change every few months, and Notion has reshaped its AI bundles more than once. If you find a figure that is no longer correct, tell us via the contact page and we will fix it.
