Embeddings are stored temporarily using ChromaDB on the deployment server and are typically purged every 12–24 hours due to vector database size and memory constraints. The developers note that in the future, embeddings will be deleted one hour after a user requests them. While cached embeddings could theoretically be accessed by someone with the link, the plugin does not allow users to discover what others have searched or embedded.

ChatWithPDF is positioned as a research-oriented tool, particularly useful for students, analysts, or professionals who need to extract insights from PDFs without leaving the ChatGPT environment. It eliminates the need for manual scanning or external tools by bringing document querying into the conversational AI workflow.

However, the tool requires the PDF to be publicly accessible, which may limit its use with sensitive or proprietary documents. Users on ChatGPT Free tiers may not have access to the Plugin Store, restricting availability to Pro or higher subscribers. Additionally, the reliance on temporary embedding storage means that very long sessions or repeated queries on the same document may require re-uploading if the cache has been purged.
