LM Studio is a desktop application for downloading and running open-weight language models on your own machine. No API key, no per-token billing, and — the part that decides it for many people — no data leaving the device.
It is the shortest path from “I would like to try an open model” to actually having one running, which is why it turns up in so many workflows that start with a privacy constraint.
Tired of juggling ten tabs? ToolSuite bundles the AI workflow tools power users rely on — in one place.
Try ToolSuite NowWhat is LM Studio?
LM Studio gives you a searchable catalogue of open models, downloads them, and runs them locally through its own runtime — MLX on Apple silicon and llama.cpp elsewhere. You get a chat interface immediately, and a local server that speaks the OpenAI API format, so existing code can be pointed at your own machine by changing a base URL.
More recently it ships Bionic, an agent for open models that works on documents and code, handles automations and computer control, and does real-time voice transcription locally. It can run the current frontier open models as its backend.
Key features
- Fully local. Models run on your hardware; your prompts stay there.
- Model catalogue. Browse, download and switch models inside the app.
- OpenAI-compatible server. Point existing integrations at localhost.
- Bionic agent. Document and code work, automation, and local voice transcription.
- Developer tooling. SDKs for JavaScript and Python, plus an
lmscommand-line tool. - MLX and llama.cpp. Sensible runtime for whichever machine you are on.
How to use it
Install it, search the catalogue, and download a model sized for your RAM — as a rough guide, a quantised 7B or 8B model is comfortable on 16 GB. This is the easiest way to try the open Arabic models: Jais and ALLaM both run well locally.
For development, enable the local server and change your base URL. Most code written against the OpenAI API works unchanged.
Limitations to be aware of
Local means limited by local hardware. Large models need a lot of memory, and an older laptop will be slow — the honest comparison is not against a frontier hosted model but against nothing at all when you cannot send data outside. Model quality also varies enormously across the catalogue, so evaluate rather than assume.
Verdict
LM Studio is the default recommendation for running models locally, especially for anyone handling material that cannot go to a third party. It is also the least painful way to evaluate open Arabic models on your own prompts. See How to Run AI Models on Your Own Computer for a fuller walkthrough.
