Captions is an AI video editor built for people who film themselves on a phone, talk to the camera, and want a post-ready clip without ever touching a timeline. It is worth trying if you are a solo creator or a small marketing team turning out short videos every week. If you edit long-form video, or want frame-level control, its one-tap approach will get in your way.

We checked everything below against the company’s website, pricing page and App Store listing in October 2026. We did not pay for a plan, so this describes what the vendor documents rather than output we produced ourselves.

The company is now Mirage; the app is still Captions

On 4 September 2025 the company announced it was changing its name from Captions to Mirage, recasting itself as a video-model research lab rather than a creator-app maker. The app kept its name and its home at captions.ai, while mirage.app now hosts the research and company pages. The company has since folded Mirage Studio, its product for brands and advertisers, into Captions, and former Studio subscribers find their projects and AI actors by signing in to Captions. If you see both names, they are the same business, and the thing you subscribe to is Captions.

It started with subtitles and now attempts the whole edit

AI Edit applies a style you pick, cutting scenes, overlaying B-roll and adding music. A chat-based editor takes change requests in plain English. Around that sit eye-contact correction, removal of background noise, pauses and filler words, a tool that slices a long video into short clips, generated music and sound effects, and AI “twins” or stock AI actors that can front an ad for you.

That breadth is the appeal for non-editors. It also means most of what you pay for is generative work billed in credits, not the basic editing tools.

The free tier is a demo; Max is where it starts

Prices below are in US dollars as shown on the pricing page in October 2026. The page notes they are iOS plan prices, and yearly billing is discounted.

PlanPer monthWhat you get
Free$0Basic tools: trimming, transitions, one caption template, no AI credits
Max$24.99500 credits a month, AI Edit, AI twins, chat-based editor, clips
Frontier$69.99 / $139.99 / $279.991,400, 2,800 or 5,600 credits, plus the strongest generative models
EnterpriseCustomCustom seats, training-data exclusion, account management

Unused credits roll over, capped at three times your monthly allowance. Note that “training data exclusion” appears only as an Enterprise feature; if your footage is sensitive, read the privacy policy before uploading on a consumer plan.

Arabic: interface and dubbing yes, subtitles worth testing

The App Store listing includes Arabic among the interface languages, and the dubbing page names Arabic among 30+ target languages. Lipdub, which re-syncs your lips to the new language in a clone of your own voice, is a paid feature. Subtitles cover “100+ languages”, but we found nothing showing how well it handles Gulf, Egyptian or Maghrebi dialects, or whether right-to-left text survives the more decorative caption templates.

The free plan is enough for a five-minute check: record a minute in your everyday dialect, auto-caption it, and look for three things. Are the Arabic letters joined properly? Does word order hold when an English term appears mid-sentence? How many dialect words did it miss?

Who it suits, and when to pick something else

Captions suits phone-first creators who want a finished clip in minutes, and anyone dubbing their content into other languages, including into Arabic. For text-based editing of podcasts and long videos, Descript is the better fit. For a free editor with a full timeline, try CapCut; for cutting long videos into shorts, Opus Clip. If what you really want is a presenter avatar, compare HeyGen and Synthesia first.
